It is a warm personal reminiscence of learning directly from Walt Disney for 12 years, followed by more than 30 years devoted to championing his vision and standards as the Disney empire grew. The story covers Disney’s highlights, including the 1960 Winter Olympics, 1964-1965 New York World’s Fair, and the development and opening of Disneyland, Walt Disney World, Epcot, Tokyo Disneyland and Disneyland Paris. Unlike other Disney books, this story is told from the perspective of operations rather than Imagineering. It touches on decisions that defined the guest experience and Disney’s reputation for quality in areas ranging from capacity and people-moving, training, delivering a consistent “good show,” food service, and more. This first-person narrative is presented as a series of wide-ranging vignettes. Some vignettes focus on personal, character-shaping events, such as the injury that ended his collegiate football career. Other stories touch on national events, such as Nikita Khrushchev’s derailed visit to Disneyland, the decision to close the park following the assassination of John F. Kennedy, and Ronald Reagan’s assistance in expediting the visa process for cast members staffing the Epcot World Showcase. Few people have enjoyed a life so immersed in Disney magic. These stories share that magic through the memories of one of the original doers and dreamers. Searching for that perfect gift for the #1 Disney fan in your life? REVIEW

I recently read “Walt’s Apprentice” by Disney Legend, Dick Nunis. As a former Disneyland employee, and longtime Disney fan, I knew who he was (as he was still with the company in 1997 when I began working at Disneyland) and knew of a few of his positions in the company, but I didn’t know just how fascinating this man really is. His book covers his life before working for the company…as a football star at USC….and his seemingly chance opportunity to work at Disneyland. As I read his book, I felt a strong connection with his work ethic…whatever needs to be done, you should be willing and able to do those “other duties as required”. And boy did he! This man started as an orientation instructor at Disneyland along with the Disneyland Alumni Club’s founder Van France! The two of them wrote the book on how to be a Cast Member from the ground up! The book goes on to discuss his exactly 44 year career with the Walt Disney Company. Yes, exactly 44 years! All throughout the book are his memories, recollections, conversations, highs, lows, struggles, and highlights of his career….including MANY memories of interacting with Walt Disney himself. After all, when you go from orientation instructor to assistant supervisor of Adventureland and Frontierland at Disneyland…to director of operations of Disneyland…to vice president of operations of Disneyland…to executive vice president of Disneyland and Walt Disney World…to president of Walt Disney Attractions…to chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts…to a Disney Legend, I’m sure you’d have many memories to share! Not only does Mr. Nunis share his memories, but at the end of each chapter, he shares a “Lesson Learned” from each experience. Loved those! I also loved the fact that his main focus in the company was the Parks and Resorts. That was his area of expertise and could respond to other areas of the company through that lens. As a person who loves to learn more about Disney History, I thoroughly enjoyed this first hand recollection of the formative years of both Disneyland and Walt Disney World. In fact, I enjoyed this book so much that I wrote to Mr. Nunis and asked for his autograph, which he supplied on the photo I sent him. If you’re a Disney History buff, worked for Disneyland or Walt Disney World, or just like to hear stories of Walt, I highly recommend this book!
