REVIEW

I have purchased over 100 books from Amazon – my nickname on Amazon is thebookscout a hobby that has to do with buying and selling used and rare books. My real name is David LeClair. So yes, I have bought a ton of books from Amazon, but this might be my first review. I met Randy through a correspondence chess program. We played 30 or 40 games and despite me having more experience we came out about even. He plays a very creative game of chess. At some point he writes to me through the prison email system, “Hey wouldn’t it be nice if we could play a game at a Starbucks?” I was like, “Sure Randy that would be cool.” But of course, I knew he was doing life without parole. No Starbucks in the picture. A few months later he told me he might be getting out. I believed him but didn’t believe him at the same time. But he did get out! And he went to a halfway house about 4 or 5 miles from my condo. I went over to visit and brought him a typical tournament chess set and clock although we never did get to play a game at Starbucks – maybe one day. Aah, the other improbable things he told me are that he would like to write a book about his experience and maybe shop his story for a reality TV series or a movie. Ok, Randy, ‘right’?! But let me tell you something if you read his book, Survival of the Fastest you will meet a character who has ultimate determination. He has been out a prison few years now – he has this book; he has a documentary on Netflix and word has it his story might be made into a major motion picture. Ok enough on personal background, now a word or two about the book. A very fast read that will take you into the world of major marijuana smuggling in the 80’s and into Randy’s drive (no pun intended) to make his mark in the world of professional racing. His is an incredible story which includes surviving 27 years in prison with compassion and spirituality intact. I don’t know what else to say, this is one good read!
